HBO Kicks Off Viral Marketing Campaign for Game of Thrones
It’s no secret that many of us here at NNAR are fans of George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series, and this isn’t the first time I’ve mentioned the upcoming Game of Thrones series on HBO. Needless to say, I was giddy when I learned that HBO kicked off a new viral marketing campaign in anticipation of the show’s April 17th debut.
Late last week, reports began coming in from websites across the Internet about packages they’d received, containing a map of the book’s main continent of Westeros, six phials of scented oils, and two scrolls showing the owner how to combine the oils to create the scents of key locations from the books. Awesome, but for the large portion of the world that isn’t identified as important enough to get such cool stuff, this didn’t really have any direct effect. Until today.

A few hours ago the show’s official Twitter profile sent out a link to the first website for the campaign, The Maester’s Path, which should sound familiar to those of you who have read the books. It seems that each one of the next 5 Mondays (including today), a new puzzle will be released. These all have to be completed to complete The Maester’s Path and receive whatever rewards might be in store. Today’s puzzle is closely tied to the scent kits that were sent out last week, and I imagine the others will be similarly tied to future items as well. I’m really excited to see what this campaign has in store, and what cool swag we nerds might be able to obtain if we follow the clues.
