Detective Dee and The Mystery of the Phantom Flame Trailer

Posted by on Jul 28, 2011

Adapted from the eponymous book by Lin Qianyu, Detective Dee and The Mystery of The Phantom Flame is a slightly fictionalized account of Tang Dynasty official Dí Rénjié.  And, by slightly, I mean they’ve turned it into a steampunk kung-fu supernatural detective story.  Wait, what?

This movie looks all sorts of insane, in the best way possible.  That said, it did do quite well at the 30th Hong Kong Film Awards, picking up nominations in many categories and wins in several, including Best Actress and Best Director.  Although the film made its official North American debut at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, it appears it will be getting a wider release on September 2.  I seriously hope this happens.

I know what you’re thinking. Did someone finally answer my prayers and mid-air roundhouse kick Harry Potter’s Patronus? Yes, my friend. The answer is yes.

Check out the film’s official website here.

This looks like way too much fun for one movie.  I just sincerely hope that they didn’t show the best parts of the movie in the trailer (I don’t get why do so many producers do that…).  But yes, very excited for this

    • They do it because the rest of the movie isn’t good.

      • (not what I think is happening here, btw)

It is  coming out in the states – … gotta keep with it! September 2 in NY and LA. I saw it at NYAFF this year – it was pretty massive. They played about 50% of the cool scenes in the trailer – BUT they only played snips of what actually happens during, so I don’t think this ruins it. They left the coolest scene out, def!!!
