Game of Thrones Making Of CGI Video

Game of Thrones

I don’t know about you, but I cannot wait for spring 2012, when HBO is bestowing unto me more of the sweet ambrosia that is A Game of Thrones every Sunday night.  There are few stories I am as excited about, so when I saw this video showing how some of the epic scenes from the show looked with and without CGI, it got my blood boiling and ready to jump headfirst back into Westeros.  Beware that it contains some spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the whole first season (and I mean down to the final shot), then these aren’t the droids you’re looking for.

There are two things I think are particularly cool about this video.  First is that I am constantly amazed at how seamlessly modern computer graphics are able to blend with real set pieces to make an amazing looking movie/television show.  The second thing is that the video goes to show what is most important about this series (and the books before it): the people.  There is literally only one shot in this entire set that did more than add environment effects.  Everything else was adding buildings in the background or filling out a scene with some epic details.  The real story is the characters, and GoT doesn’t compromise that with CG models thrown in everywhere.  Even the wide shot of three members of the Night’s Watch coming from under the wall features three real actors in a vast landscape, when the whole thing could have been generated without much trouble.

Also that music is always awesome and leaves me wanting more.

That’s pretty excellent. It’s also an example of CGI done right in my opinion. You’ll notice the fields, the cliffs, some of the buildings in the foreground are all real – your mind doesn’t feel weird about them because they’re not weird. The CGI is a background enhancement.
