Myst and Riven on Crazy Sale

Posted by on Aug 27, 2011

The utterly confounding Myst and it’s sequel, Riven, are on sale over at GOG.com.  You can pick up both for $2.99 each, this weekend only.  For those of you unfamiliar with the site, GOG stands for Good Old Games, and they offer quality retro titles (and some new ones, like those in the Witcher series) entirely free of DRM.  Good stuff.

The beauty of a game like Myst is that, unlike an unfortunate percentage of newer titles, it doesn’t live or die with its graphics.  The incredibly well-crafted mystery is what will pull you in and keep you there, years after its original release.  I personally challenge anyone to complete both of these games without any sort of outside help (internet, game guides, etc.).  And if you have the constitutional fortitude to attempt such a task, may God have mercy on your soul.

  • I lost so many hours of my childhood to these, which might be the hardest puzzle games I have ever played.

  • Despite the fact that it doesn’t matter one iota for gameplay it’s pretty amazing how much these games have aged.  I remember when they first came out, they were, more than any other game, fully photo realistic (or so I thought). Pretty amazing how relative computer graphics are.
