Attending My First Comic-Con

My own nerdiness is generally focused on fantasy and sci-fi books, music, some TV shows and movies, and every now then a mainstream video game.  You will notice that I did not say comics.  However, after attending the Baltimore Comic-Con this weekend, my enormous backlog of “books you absolutely have to read, dude” has just about doubled with the addition of Graphic Novels; both those purchased at the Baltimore Con and those lent from the libraries of Third, Wade, and Chris.  If only Tom didn’t live on the west coast, I would raid his extensive collection as well. But I digress.

To be completely honest, I was nervous about attending a comic convention.  I was nervous about appearing to be ignorant about the material, nervous about the crazy-weird people I would see there, and nervous that I would get swindled into buying things I did not want.  But come sundown on Sunday Funday, those apprehensions were gone, and I was happy as a clam, albeit exhausted. Newest Hobbit Production Video(s)

“Chip the glasses crack the plates, that’s what Bilbo Baggins hates.”  Cram 13 Dwarves, 1 wizard, and 1 timid, overly-concerned-with-manners little Hobbit into one room for dinner, and what do you get? Two excellent Peter Jackson films!  With the third (and in my opinion, best) production video released just hours ago, we can really, for the first time, step back into Middle Earth, and whet our appetites for The Hobbit, Parts 1 and 2.

The Amazing Spider-Man Trailer

Sick of superhero movies yet? Yeah, we aren’t either.  With Thor and Green Lantern already released, and Captain America and The Avengers coming up, we have almost satiated our Comic-Hero fix.  And by almost, I mean as close as you can come to satisfying an unquenchable desire.  As we’ve mentioned before, we are quite excited for the new Spider-man remake – The Amazing Spider-ManAnd finally, we get our first glimpses of this version of our web-throwing friend in action.

Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

How do you successfully wrap up an epic saga in just a few short hours of screen time?  Well, in some cases, you don’t – at least not completely.  Harry Potter, the epic fantasy saga with a massive fan base, spent 7 books following the stories of Harry, Hermione, and Ron and their battle against He-who-shall-not-be-named.  The movies numbered one more, with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows being split into two films.  So with the knowledge that not ALL of the detail from the final book could be crammed into these two films, we must simply ask – how’d they do?  Honestly, they did OK.

BEWARE: This review is chock-full of spoilers.  If you’ve read the books then you’re going to be OK, but if you haven’t and still want to be surprised by the movie, you should probably move along.

Dark Knight Rises Teaser Trailer Leaked

That’s right.  It has been leaked.  What seems to be an official teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises.  It is already been removed from youtube, with a message that says it was taken down by WB for copyright issues.  However, there is a ghetto version on Facebook.  It would seem that this is not part of TDKR viral marketing scheme, but who knows? Stranger things have happened.  Check it out here – before this too gets removed.

Teaser Poster – The Dark Knight Rises

The anticipation for Christopher Nolan’s next and supposedly final installment of the Batman movie franchise is through the roof.  Now that viral marketing is a well established form of promotion, fans are jumping on every little morsel they can get, as soon as they can get it.  We were first introduced to the viral campaign for The Dark Knight Rises back in May, when some mysterious chanting appeared on the official website.  This then lead to a Twitter hashtag (#TheFireRises), which eventually revealed a picture of Thomas Hardy as Bane.  So, fellow fans, here is the next morsel – this first teaser poster for TDKR was posted late last night on their official website, www.thedarkknightrises.comRead moreRead more

Score one for the Nerds!   It is pretty well known that the vast majority of literature and media enjoyed by nerds around the world is fiction.  Be it comics, fantasy, sci-fi, TV shows, movies, even video games (OK, this may be a stretch for the purposes of this article, but we’re going with it), nerds LOVE fiction.  We have been proclaiming that ‘Nerd’ is the new ‘Cool’ forever…  Now, there is a study with some psychology case evidence that reading fiction actually improves your social understanding.  All y’all haters say hi to thatRead moreRead more

Review: The Hunger Games Trilogy (no spoilers)

Kids killing kids.  Kids killing kids while being filmed.  Kids killing kids, being filmed, and being broadcast live across an entire nation, where every citizen is forced to watch on pain of death.  Welcome to the nation of Panem, which rose from the ashes of what was once North America and gives us the willies the same way George Orwell’s Oceania did in 1984.  In this fast paced and hip new trilogy, Suzanne Collins takes readers on a roller-coaster journey of love, pain, murder, betrayal, insanity, and revolution. Kate from LOST to join cast of ‘The Hobbit’

Kate was one of the most compelling, intricate, and downright sexy characters in the hit TV series LOST.  Played by Evangeline Lilly, her character captured (and often times broke) the hearts of the two manly-men male leads, Jack and Sawyer, along with the hearts of fans across the globe.  Now, Lilly is back, and will be playing the Elf Tauriel in Peter Jackson’s two part film project of The Hobbit.   Read moreRead more

Original Halo to be Remade and Remastered

That’s right.  Halo the original is being redone.  Bungie released this revolutionary first person shooter back in November 15, 2001.  Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is set to release for XBOX 360 on November 15, 2001 – exactly ten years after the original.

This new game boasts remastered HD graphics and sound enhancement, while keeping the campaign story line consistent with the original.  Co-op play and XBOX Live options will also be incorporated.  The most exciting piece of information is that seven of the original multiplayer maps will be present in this Anniversary edition.  While details on which maps specifically these are, we can only hope that favorites like Blood Gulch, Hang ‘Em High, and Derelict will be included in the seven. And so without further ado, here is the trailer that was released a few days back at E3Read moreRead more
