NYCC: State of DC Comics

DC made several announcements over the weekend, including titles coming out over the next year and just who’s going to be working on them. But let’s be real: what we all wanted to hear about was the publisher’s response to fairly fervent fan furor about the portrayal of women in a few of the New 52 titles. They certainly had a response, and it was disappointing, promising, and hilarious all at the same time. Hit the jump to get the details.

NYCC: Day 2 Recap

Friday was the first day of New York Comic Con that was open to the majority of the general public (those who paid extra for VIP passes got access for a little while on Thursday), and my was it busy.  The Javits Convention Center was packed to the gills with cosplayers, creators, fanpersons (we are nothing if not PC at NNAR), and even us humble members of the press.  While we aren’t able to be everywhere at once, we did try to get around and see what we anticipated to be some of the cooler stuff today.  Check out the highlights after The Jump. TDKR’s Bane Revealed!

When the official website for The Dark Knight Rises launched this morning, expectant fans hoping for news of the film’s now ongoing production were greeted, instead, by cryptic chanting.  Through some pretty impressive technical wizardry, one such fan analyzed said chanting and found (wait for it) a Twitter hashtag, “#TheFireRises”.  As that hashtag has been tweeted out, an image has been slowly revealed on the main site.  That image is our first look at Tom Hardy’s character, Bane.

Many, including myself, have/had concerns about how Bane will fit into the more “realistic” version of Gotham City that Nolan and company have built over the previous two films.  If you aren’t familiar with the character, he’s a criminal genius (aren’t they all?) who augments his already considerable physical strength via the drug “Venom”.  Said drug is self administered, through hydraulic tubing that has become a staple of the character’s costume, directly into his brain.

Take a look.

Batman Arkham Asylum 2 Trailer Just Released

Nerd News And Reviews loves Batman.  A lot.  One of my fondest memories is when the four of us trekked the 40 miles from our college apartment to see The Dark Knight in its full, six-story IMAX glory.  We love the movies, we love the comics, and we loved 2009’s video game entry, Arkham Asylum (as did most of the rest of the world), and we’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of the sequel this coming October 18th.

Needless to say we were ecstatic to learn that a brand new trailer had been released for the game, and after watching it, I have to say this makes the list of one of my favorite video game trailers ever.  While I don’t think it lives up to the sheer artistic brilliance of the first Gears of War trailer or the recent Dead Island trailer, it is pretty effing awesome.

Hit it to check it.

Catwoman and Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises”

After years of rumors and speculation, the supporting cast/villains of the third Nolan Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, were announced recently.  Anne Hathaway will play Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Tom Hardy will play Bane.  I’m not crazy about Hathaway, but Catwoman is an obvious choice for the tone of these movies, and I’ve learned better than to doubt Nolan’s casting choices.  That said, while Hardy was one of the best parts of the incredible Inception, I have my reservations about Bane.  Bane’s “power” stems from his use/abuse of the super steroid “Venom” which (in many depictions of the character) causes him to instantly grow to several times his usual size.  Think the Hulk’s transformation, and you’re on the right track.  Unless Nolan and company diverge significantly from traditional depictions of the character, I think Bane will have a hard time fitting into the “realistic” tone that has been carefully constructed over the previous two films.  Here’s hoping I’m wrong.

What do you guys think?

Batman: Arkham City Screenshots Leaked

So if you haven’t played Batman: Arkham Asylum, available for Xbox 360 or PS3, you need to go do that immediately.  Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Good, now that we’ve taken care of that, let’s move on to the upcoming sequel, Arkham City.  This was announced earlier this year and is currently set for release sometime in late 2011.  It takes place an unknown amount of time after the first game, and it seems from the trailer that Arkham Asylum has for some reason been moved into the city proper.  Joker has somehow engineered a second prison break and the inmates aren’t just running the asylum, but the entire city instead.  I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed the first game and am eagerly anticipating its sequel.

It seems that sometime yesterday 20 screenshots from the upcoming title were leaked to The Internets, and oh man are they gorgeous.  I am now more excited for this than ever.

Screens after the jump.
